Belper West, Derbyshire

  • Project: Masterplan
  • Client: Amber Valley Borough Council

Lathams was commissioned to work in partnership with Amber Valley Borough Council to produce a masterplan for Belper West.

The study area was focused on a substantial area to the west of the town centre and includes part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The masterplan area contains a substantial quantity of land that is under pressure for re-development, however fragmented land ownership and restricted vehicular access issues serve as barriers to the delivery of development compatible with the sensitivity of the location.

A spatial solution was produced through close collaboration with the Local Authority based on a rigorous option appraisal. The masterplan proposal includes various land uses which seek to support and strengthen the adjacent town centre including retail, residential and office space as well as a ‘Relief Street’, which would remove traffic from the main arterial route through central Belper and improve access to the countryside to the west.
