Adding a modern touch to historic housing

  • Project: Railway Cottages, Derby
  • Client: Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust
  • Contractor: Milwards
  • Scale: 55 cottages
  • Value: £1m

The earliest-known railway cottages in the world were purchased, with the help of Lathams who prepared the conservation designation, by the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust to create an urban village. The key issue was to raise the value of the 55 Grade II listed properties, ensuring income was high enough to cover repair costs.

Lathams knew that maintaining space was essential, so bathrooms were placed on the first floor to avoid reducing the number of bedrooms. Front garden space was created by moving the main road and access was created by re-routing pathways.

We retained the period character of the cottages through careful use of stone kerbs, steps and paving, along with specially selecting street lighting.
