Providing a vibrant new theatre and museum

  • Project: Rhodes Centre, Bishop's Stortford
  • Client: Bishop's Stortford Town Council
  • Contractor: William Verry Ltd
  • Value: £2.5m

Lathams was commissioned to undertake a major refurbishment of the Rhodes Centre, comprising the house in which Cecil Rhodes was born and a large extension known as ‘The Commonwealth Centre’. The aim was to improve museum facilities and create a more effective performance space and meeting centre for the local community.

By re-ordering and extending the space, Lathams was able to provide a theatre with large foyer, café and bar, along with a dance studio and conference/meeting rooms. Working closely with museum fit-out specialist Haley Sharpe, Lathams developed proposals to open up the spaces while retaining original features and evidence of the original villa layout.

The Grade II listed building now houses exhibitions on the life of Cecil Rhodes along with other displays.
