Preserving the essence of a much-loved centre

  • Project: Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham
  • Client: Grosvemor Laing Urban Enterprise
  • Contractor: Wates
  • Scale: 60 x 200-2,000sqft business units
  • Value: £2.8m

Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter has been rejuvenated thanks to an urban renewal project undertaken by Lathams.

The scheme combines conservation with new, incorporates art into architecture and has brought 60 small business units into the area.

Through clever consolidation and repair work, we have retained the former appearance while incorporating modern, functional workspaces designed to flood jewellers' benches with daylight. The buildings have been designed to blend with the existing, re-using bricks and iron window frames from the site.

Two external courtyards provide relief from the urban environment, linking spaces between workshops and providing secluded places for people to enjoy.
