Adding a contemporary twist to a 19th century home

  • Project: Bentons, Hadleigh, Suffolk
  • Client: Mr and Mrs A. Banks
  • Contractor: J. W. Younger and Son
  • Scale: Domestic re-ordering, extension and landscape works
  • Value: ££750k

The new owners of Bentons – a former Regency-style parsonage dating back to the 1850s – asked Lathams to turn it into a contemporary home for their young family.

The house comprises high-ceilinged reception rooms and bedrooms, with a wing with staff and kitchen areas, plus a single-storey utility block. The client wanted to keep the essence of the home, retaining its grandeur and elegance but making it fit for modern living.

We focused on conserving the main house, adapting the wing into a large, open-plan kitchen, breakfast room and garden room, with guest bedrooms above, while the utility block now provides an estate office, plant areas and large gymnasium. The landscaping was redesigned to give the maximise the views from the main rooms.
