Derby’s new gateway
- Project: Castleward, Derby
- Client: Derby City Council
- Scale: 800 new homes, 36,500sqft commercial space, a new school and public open spaces
- Value: £100m
Lathams was commissioned to produce a masterplan for the Castleward area of Derby, a larger area of land positioned within the zone of transition around the city centre. In addition there are a large number of opportunity sites where redevelopment is imminent which includes a hospital site of ten hectares.
Major problems within the area include poor linkages between the rail station and the city centre, fragmentation, isolation and a weak identity.
A number of options were drawn up and an extensive public consultation exercise was carried out which included stakeholder workshops and public exhibitions. The resulting option includes a new urban route bounded by mixed-use development blocks, a new residential community based around shared recreational facilities and a new urban village.
