Renewing historic River Gardens

  • Project: Swiss Tea Rooms, Belper River Gardens
  • Client: Amber Valley Borough Council
  • Scale: Competition for extension and refurbishment

A competition entry for the extension and refurbishment of the Swiss Tea Rooms. The building is intended as a destination within the River Gardens where the public can stop, sit and look back at the landscaped garden and the river, or play in the play area.

The shape and form of the original building has an iconic status with local residents and it was considered very important that the new scheme’s roof should reflect that. The new roof is designed to replicate the form of the original thatched roof with a second pair of dormer windows added to the eastern side to provide morning light into the interior. The building sits upon slender timber columns on a raised plinth establishing its presence within the landscape.
