Breathing new life into an unused farmstead

  • Project: Private residence, Swinscoe, Derbyshire
  • Client: Private client
  • Contractor: Private builder
  • Scale: Farmstead and farmhouse

The owners of Ellis Hill Farm was looking to undertake restoration, demolition and new-build projects in the previously redundant farmstead. They wanted to create a natural garden with several water bodies within.

We designed sympathetic extensions and alterations to the main farmhouse and also designed a large stone storage barn and a brick accommodation building within the former farmyard.

Our approach to the landscaping needed to overcome the large amounts of water run off throughout the year, so we created a central courtyard feature which encompasses the three main buildings. A wildflower meadow adds a splash of colour in one of the main fields, and we used traditional Staffordshire blue brick and granite to pave the courtyard.
