Refurbishing and remodelling for transformational learning

  • Project: Haywood Engineering College Stoke-on-Trent
  • Client: Stoke-on-Trent City Council
  • Contractor: Thomas Vale Wates
  • Scale: Refurbishment and new build
  • Value: £7.2m

Lathams was commissioned to act as client design advisor as part of the Stoke-on-Trent’s Building Schools for the Future programme, with Haywood Engineering College identified for major refurbishment of its 60s and 70s classroom blocks.

Through a series of design workshops, Lathams engaged with staff, students and the local community to ensure that the college’s vision was incorporated into the design brief, informing the layout and function of the finished buildings.

We developed a masterplan for remodelling the classroom blocks, moving away from outdated long corridors, cellular classrooms and didactic learning, towards more contemporary, flexible spaces. The refurbished areas incorporate furniture types and forms that allow the spaces to function in a variety of ways and at different scales to suit staff and student needs.
