Transforming a spectacular building into desirable housing

  • Project: Castle Hill, Bakewell
  • Client: Cathelco
  • Contractor: Linfords

The Grade II listed Castle Hill House in Bakewell had been used as a boarding house for a local school, and Lathams was commissioned to design and implement a conversion scheme for the building.

As a result of the proposals the main house and stable block at the site – situated in both the Peak Park and Local Conservation Areas – were split into eight mews houses and apartments. A gardener’s cottage has been extended and two new houses have been built to replace an old dormitory block.

The new houses are part earth sheltered and green roofed, these houses use local stone to form a plinth under modern glazed upper levels.
