Druid Quarter, Hinckley, Leicestershire

  • Project: Conservation Masterplan
  • Client: Hinckley and Bosworth Council

Hinckley is a small town lying mid-way between Leicester and Coventry. Hosiery, the towns traditional industry, has suffered severe employment loss in recent years and as a result many buildings, some of which are of historic interest, have become either vacant or underused and neglected. The study area focused on Druid Street to the north of the commercial core of the town and contains a high concentration of former hosiery buildings. Lathams together with regeneration consulting partners produced a comprehensive 10-year spatial and economic masterplan for the area. The process included considerable consultation with the community, business and property owners.

Design briefs were produced for 12 sites together with re-use proposals for a range of existing buildings.

The study was strengthened by a detailed assessment of the historic value of the most significant former hosiery buildings in the area.
