Holmes Road, Sowerby Bridge

Lathams was appointed to produce a detailed development brief to illustrate in detail how one of the most important development sites within central Sowerby Bridge could be taken forward. The site is currently occupied by a range of disparate industrial users and is constrained by poor pedestrian connectivity and weak vehicular access. The narrow river front site is also constrained by both its inefficient shape and flood risk.

Stakeholder, agency, officer and landowner discussions helped to guide the content as did the findings from urban design, technical, market and policy baseline work. Lathams produced a character assessment and urban design survey of the site and its context which was used to inform a set of design principles. These were supplemented by acknowledged best practice.

The development brief has now been adopted by Calderdale as a formal supplementary planning document.
