Rescue and re-use of Brunel's unique cast iron bridge

  • Project: Brunel Bridge, Paddington, London
  • Client: British Waterways & European Land
  • Scale: 1ha of canalside land
  • Value: £5m

Discovered by chance (encased in the Bishop's Road bridge during demolition) this unique, early cast iron bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel was rescued, dismantled, put into storage and earmarked for restoration and relocation. Lathams led the preparation of a Stage 1 Heritage Lottery Fund submission for the work, including options to demonstrate the wider benefits of the reinstatement and reuse of this important structure.

Our scheme seeks to make the bridge the centrepiece of a reinvigorated Stone Wharf Gardens, bridging the Grand Union Canal.
