Offering a unique, character-filled space for local businesses

  • Project: St Michael’s Church, Derby
  • Contractor: Millwards
  • Scale: Repair and conversion of 19th century church
  • Value: £250k

Having stood, with approval to demolish, empty and decaying for six years, a permanent solution to repair and convert this 19th century church appeared to have been lost. However, Lathams design for rescue was an ingenious blend of the old and the new, creating a spectacular new home for local businesses.

Many original fittings and some memorials were relocated, but most of the glass and ceramic tile tablets remained in place. We transformed the ringing chamber in the tower into a conference room, the original church porch became a reception area, and lavatories and a meeting gallery were installed under a mezzanine.

Apart from providing two upper floors to house Lathams, the conversion created extra lettable space, with the ground floor divided into units which now houses a variety of businesses.
