Using a water-inspired theme to develop Thornton Reservoir

  • Project: Thornton Fishing Lodge, Leicestershire
  • Client: Severn Trent Water

Lathams has transformed a woodland edge adjacent to Thornton Reservoir in Leicestershire. We designed a fisherman’s lodge, small visitor centre and WC accommodation, creating a unique and innovative structure inspired by the water. To offer easy access for anglers, we used piles driven into the water to carry a stilted timber walkway.

The building was based on a combined concept of an upturned boat and the section through the curving body of a fish. We covered the curved ‘hull’ of the roof in cedar shingles – a product we have used before, which we know weathers well, and has the added effect of mimicking the scales of a fish.

The project, partially funded by the Hinckley and Bosworth District Council, has won a Civic Trust Commendation.
