Making a modern home from a beautiful historic barn

  • Project: Grange Barn, Offcote, Ashbourn, Derbyshire
  • Client: Mr and Mrs Stevenson
  • Contractor: Simon Baines

Our remit for Grange Barn, a Grade II courtyard of barns and implement sheds, was to create a spacious contemporary home for its new owners.

We sensitively stabilised, repaired and re-roofed the brick-built exterior, and added high levels of thin insulation to all the external elements. Our only alteration to the exterior was adding a single window, which was a faithful reproduction of others in the main barn.

The existing room layout inside was largely retained – we re-floored the simple internal spaces to create dramatic rooms and vistas. In order to create space, we removed all the floors in the hayloft and replaced them at a different height, making room for a double-height steel and glass helical stairway, which rises through the central hall, forming a spectacular centrepiece to the home.
