A contemporary space in a historic building

  • Project: Whitworth Centre, Darley Dale, Derbyshire
  • Client: The Whitworth Centre
  • Contractor: Bodill Ltd
  • Scale: Refurbishment, repair and extension
  • Value: ££1.7m

This Grade II listed community facility had fallen into disrepair and was struggling to find a wide enough range of viable uses.

Constructed using the finest architectural materials of the day, all of the original architecture and most of the original furniture intact, so our approach was to restore the building's character with as little intervention as possible. At the same time we needed to make it fit for new uses, particularly conferencing.

We carried out a Conservation Management Plan, detailed design plans and exhibition proposals. We repaired and upgraded the interior function spaces, created a new café and kitchen facility, and improved access throughout. An extension for conferencing ‘break-out space’ was the only new-build element.
