Giving a neglected church a bright future

  • Project: St John’s Church, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent
  • Client: Church Converts Ltd
  • Contractor: Staffordshire building Restoration and Conservation Ltd
  • Scale: Re-use and repair
  • Value: £393k

Lathams was appointed to identify the best commercial use for this sadly neglected church, with minimal impact on the building’s fabric and character.

The aim was to repair rather than restore, so plans needed to provide a minimum 25-year life for the building, with further thinking built in for subsequent repairs. The primary principle was to identify areas of development which were structurally critical, rather than cosmetic.

Now, with the proper maintenance, the building should not need any further structural work for the next 25 years plus. Together with the repair of front walls and piers and basic landscaping, the property is available as a ‘shell’ for letting to a restaurateur to fit out.
