Enhancing a landmark from the 17th century

  • Project: Nottingham Castle, Nottinghamshire
  • Client: Nottingham City Council
  • Value: £3m

Lathams was instrumental in carrying out a four-phase refurbishment project for Nottingham Castle, a 17th century Grade I listed building. As it attracts over 350,000 visitors a year, the phased project allowed the site to remain open to visitors at all times.

The crux of the project was to maintain the historic nature of the building while introducing necessary contemporary aspects, such as lighting and access points. Another key part of the project was to increase income generation.

In order to meet this brief, the development included a new café and relocation of the shop and craft gallery. Many of the original features were kept, including some which were fire damaged in 1831. In contrast, an education and community events space was installed for events, artists’ training and community use.
