Low-energy meets striking design for the NHS

  • Project: Resources Centre, Ilkeston
  • Client: Derbyshire Mental Health Service (NHS) Trust
  • Contractor: Costain Group
  • Scale: 2,000sqm over two storeys
  • Value: £4m

As part of the Three Shires NHS PFI project, Lathams was commissioned to design a mental health resource building at Ilkeston Community Hospital.

Acting as lead designer, Lathams created a contemporary building crowned with a striking 'butterfly' roof. The two storeys provide, on the ground floor, a day hospital and outpatient resources for older people with challenging mental health problems, and on the first floor, offices for the mental health team and health visitors.

The finished solution has achieved a NEAT (NHS Environmental Assessment Technique, equivalent to BREEAM Healthcare) rating of Excellent, ensuring a robust, low-energy design in a striking architectural style.
