A new school for today's, and future, teaching practices

  • Project: Darton College, Barnsley
  • Client: Barnsley Council - Barnsley Partnership for Learning
  • Contractor: Laing O'Rourke, John Laing
  • Scale: New 1,350-pupil secondary community school, 11,560 sqm
  • Value: £28m

Lathams was required to design a new school that would cater for today’s teaching practices but be easily adaptable to future changes in teaching. Achieving a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating was a priority, along with encouraging community use of facilities and avoiding the ‘labyrinth complexity’ of the existing school.

Our approach was to focus on the concept of ‘transformational spaces’, avoiding monotonous circulation and underused areas, and to create a new building that would act as a symbolic heart to the community. Central to our design concept is the Atrium, which is pivotal to the floor layouts and acts a focus for the function of everyday school activities.
