A sympathetic historic approach to a sensitive building

  • Project: Tissington Pre-Preparatory School, Derbyshire
  • Client: Sir Richard Fitzherbert
  • Scale: Conversion of 17th century estate
  • Value: £600,000

The Tissington estate, home of the Fitzherberts family for 500 years is now home to a new Preparatory School.

The new school is housed in a conversion of the old stable, which dominates the vista of the Hall from the village. The stable building thought to be originally built in the early 17th century and extensively altered in the 18th century had been redundant for 80 years although briefly used to store records during the 2nd world war.

Lathams was appointed to combine its two specialisms of historic buildings and education and consider if this building could be converted for education use. The results being a practical and inspiring environment for children to start their first steps into the world of school.
