A major new teaching block

  • Project: Helena Romanes School, Great Dunmow, Essex
  • Client: The Governors
  • Value: £2m

The teaching block designed by Lathams is aligned along a new covered ‘street’ that accommodates a quiet courtyard space and links to new social spaces.

The design responds to the concerns of the school’s masterplan, which identified the need for the work to improve pupil circulation across the school site and to allow for future flexibility of teaching accommodation.

The modern building provides general teaching classrooms, food rooms and textile rooms. It embraces a range of environmental opportunities, with a low maintenance green roof improving the thermal capacity of the building while reducing the flood risk to the adjacent playing fields.

A new natural ventilation management system provides constant fresh air to the teaching spaces and ‘light chimneys’ at the back of the classrooms provide natural light and air extraction.
