Adding an authentic local flavour to a World Heritage site

  • Project: Former Fire Stores, Belper, Derbyshire
  • Client: Wheeldon Homes
  • Contractor: Wheeldon Homes
  • Scale: 30 units

Local housebuilder Wheeldon Homes selected Lathams to help them gain planning permission for new houses and flats for this sensitive World Heritage site. As it forms part of the gateway to Belper, opposite the East Mill and within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site, both Wheeldon Homes and the Planning Authority were determined to give full justice to this prominent site.

The end result was a tightly knit courtyard scheme of two- and three-storey stone and brick houses. They were developed in keeping with the pattern of local housing, with the robust simple forms and construction reflecting early local buildings. The site now offers a small community group near the centre of this busy town.
