Urban Splash commissioned Lathams to develop a design for the conversion of the Grade II listed Silk Warehouse in Mannningham, Bradford, an essential catalyst for the regeneration of the wider area.

Lathams was chosen for its experience and expertise in creative re-use, and for its ability to integrate masterplanning, planning and historic building repair across a single project.

The Silk Mill regeneration project was supported by a mix of European, local government and private funding, with the aim of lifting an area that had suffered following industrial decline in Britain.

Working closely with our clients throughout, we developed plans which met and exceeded their aspirations for integrating contemporary urban living opportunities within a distinctive historic building, as well as creating commercial potential.

In all, our proposals delivered 132 residential units, as well as three commercial units amounting to 20,000 sq ft of potential business space.

While being sensitive throughout to the existing fabric, our considered approach to conservation and re-use justified the introduction of a new central stair core, providing main access and a carefully ventilated fire escape.

The whole construction package was circa £12 million, and its completion has been seen as a key element in the ongoing improvement of Bradford’s image and reputation.
