This commission from Nottingham City Council was to find a way to sensitively re-order the Grade I castle’s interior to achieve improved visitor flow and accessibility.
Like so many of our commissions, the project began with an analysis of listed fabric, in this case the Victorian architect TC Hine's conversion of the original 17th century ducal palace into Britain's finest art gallery.
Careful evaluation of the use and space requirements evolved into a circulation route for visitors and a back-of-house provision for curators, all linked by full disability access through the Scheduled Ancient Monument bed rock.
An integral and collaborative feature of the commission was the work of artists, poets and furniture makers. We also refurbished the galleries and introduced a new education room, café and shop.
