Lathams has won a prestigious National Waterways Award for its work on the revival of the Erewash Canal near Nottingham.
The company’s Access Strategy and Development Plan for the Erewash Canal was announced as the winner in the strategy & masterplanning category of The Waterways Renaissance Awards at The Lowry in Manchester on Wednesday night (17th March).
The awards, run by The Waterways Trust and British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) to recognise best practice in sustainable waterway regeneration, are judged in three rigorous stages of assessment by an independent panel of waterway, conservation and regeneration experts.
Announcing the Erewash scheme as the award winner, the judges commented: “This is a good example of a masterplan that has been put together in an inclusive way, involving the local community and with a prioritised list of achievable projects that can make a big impact for relatively low cost.
“The masterplan takes a number of complex social-economic issues and looks to resolve them by encouraging participation in the waterways by developing leisure and tourism hotspots.”
Lathams specialises in the creative renewal and regeneration of buildings, land and communities, and enjoys a national reputation for its work in waterside locations.
Managing director Chris Twomey said: “We are delighted to have received this prestigious national award on behalf of all the partners and agencies involved at Erewash – Lathams, British Waterways, EMDA and the three local planning authorities.
“The Erewash canal is a significant asset for the East Midlands, but one which has yet to achieve its true potential.
“The plan we have developed focuses on unlocking this potential through a series of key improvement projects, and we think what really excited the judges was being able to see that a number of these projects are already underway. This is an exciting and deliverable plan which is already guiding the regeneration of the canal.”
