Upgrading the public realm in Eckington

Lathams was invited by Bran Harrison, Senior Economic Development Projects Officer of North East Derbyshire District Council to lead a workshop focusing on generating ideas for upgrading Eckington town centre's public realm. Scheduled work due to be carried out on Market Street next year by Yorkshire Water acted as the catalyst for discussion, offering an opportunity to add value to the high street through a well thought out replacement scheme.

The workshop was attended by elected members of North East Derbyshire District Council; Heritage, Highways, Transport and Economic officers from North East Derbyshire District Council and Derbyshire County Council; Community group representatives; and Yorkshire Water.

The format of the workshop consisted of a presentation given by Lathams, covering examples of good practice in market town public realm regeneration, material selection and suggestions for an improved scheme. This was followed by a town centre audit where attendees surveyed Market Street identifying positive and negative characteristics of the existing public realm and key areas for change.

The town centre audit was followed by a lively discussion led by Lathams, where improvement proposals were examined and a strategy for moving forward was agreed upon.
