Barlborough Hall Gazebo Restoration

Lathams Director, Stuart Hodgkinson is about to begin the restoration of the Banqueting House (aka the Gazebo) at Barlborough Hall School, which is due to start on site on April 6th 2014 with Bonsers as the main contractor. The Gazebo is an important component of the Barlborough Hall estate and is separately listed Grade II*. Its period of construction can be placed within the late C16. For the most part a modest building albeit with a fine borrowed bay there lies inside a hidden gem, a now frail but still wonderful plaster chimney piece or overmantel which is to be consolidated as part of the works.

Generally the building is in a very poor condition with badly deteriorating soft clastic mudstone masonry it is categorised as a Building at risk by English Heritage priority C and urgently requires works of consolidation and repair. Following the preparation of a detailed condition assessment and analysis of construction materials to inform the specification for repair the project has been awarded an 80% grant by English Heritage.
