Lathams Wins Outstanding Leeds Architecture Award

On the 25th Anniversary of the Leeds Architecture Awards, Lathams were awarded a special award for their Victoria Quarter. This Outstanding Award was presented to the scheme which, in the view of the judges, has made the most "Outstanding contribution to architecture and design in Leeds over the last 25 years ”.

Schemes shortlisted for the award were selected from previous award winners since the first ceremony in 1987, giving the opportunity to consider which buildings have stood the test of time and the contribution they have made to the character and nature of Leeds as a city.

Lathams were originally appointed to refurbish the arcade, but went on to play a pivotal role beyond a simple refurbishment, by expanding the scope of the works to include the surrounding streets, with a view to reviving the whole area and creating an attractive and desirable quarter. The arcade buildings were returned to their former glory thanks to a careful programme of repair and restoration, but were also complemented by Latham’s new glazed, split-level roof covering over the whole of the adjacent Queen Victoria Street. This created a new form of arcade which has not only stood the test of time, from 1990 through till the present day, attracting exclusive high street brands, but has gone on to inspire the regeneration of Leeds city centre .
