Jim Mitchison has over 30 years’ architectural experience in both local government and private practice, and specialises in work for the education and health sectors.
Jim draws on experience of a wide variety of building types, but has established a strong track record in work for public sector clients and users. His work covers the full range of architectural services from inception to completion of construction and final account. Following completion of his architectural training, Jim undertook a further course of study to improve his understanding of the interconnection of architecture with urban design and planning, and he has since added further qualifications in project management.
Jim has led and managed multi-disciplinary teams on many successful projects, undertaken due diligence and peer review, and acted as independent technical advisor for commissioning organisations.
He has extensive education experience, gained on a variety of buildings from nursery to university level, and covering new build on both green field and brown field sites, as well as extensions, refurbishment and work to listed buildings.
This education experience covers state and independent sectors, training and research buildings, and PFI projects. Recently Jim has been preparing option/feasibility studies on Building Schools for the Future (BSF) projects for education authorities and participating in BSF bidding teams.
Jim’s healthcare experience has seen him leading teams on a variety of projects for Acute Hospital and Mental Health NHS Trusts. This has involved new build, extensions and remodelling existing buildings, including listed buildings. Jim is currently working on a mental health day centre, part of a large PFI for the NHS. As both education and healthcare projects can involve work in or around existing buildings, he has developed a good understanding of the need for maintaining functioning and safe environments for users throughout building developments.
